Chapter 6: Rings

The precious marriage license was in their possession now. The only thing remaining was to wait outside the justice of the peace’s office for the previous couple to finish up. In only a few minutes, they would be married and Bonnie could breathe a sigh of relief.

Bonnie put a hand on her chest and felt her heart. It was beating strong and solid as far as she could tell. She could almost believe there wasn’t anything wrong with it at all. A flicker of worry crossed through her mind. She had lived her whole life thinking she was healthy and normal. She’d never guessed that anything was really wrong with her. Apparently, though, the heart whose beat she was feeling right now had been ready to betray her at any time. It had been broken from the beginning.

It was hard not to let that make her question everything. She checked Tina’s expression. Her girlfriend—her fiancée—seemed entirely at peace. She seemed happy. Bonnie thought she could trust this. But what if, like her heart, it turned out there had been a hole in the structure of their relationship all along, something too subtle for them to notice, something that might betray them someday and kill everything Bonnie held dear?

Tina squeezed her hand. “You okay?”

“Yeah,” Bonnie said weakly.

Tina’s forehead wrinkled with concern. “Are you sure?”

“I’m totally fine physically. Don’t worry about that.”

“DX and Ilana are fine, too, I’m sure. DX must be doing a lot of quoting. I haven’t seen a single camera or protester.”

Bonnie offered a shaky smile.

“Are you worried about your parents?” Tina asked.

She shook her head.

“Please. Tell me.”

She looked down at Tina’s shoes, embarrassed to meet her gaze. “Just a little bit of cold feet is all. I know I asked you. I am sure. It’s just, this feels like a really big deal.”

Tina pulled her in closer, tucking Bonnie against her side in a gesture that had become familiar in the time they’d been together. “It is a really big deal, babe. Believe that.”

“You’re not upset?”

“That you’re nervous? No. I’m nervous, too, I’m just blocking it out right now.”

Bonnie laughed. Tina kissed the top of her head.

“Besides,” Tina continued, “we both know we didn’t really have time to think this over. Because of the circumstances, we just have to trust that this will work out somehow.”

The sound of applause came through the closed door they were standing next to. Bonnie raised her eyebrows at Tina. “Almost show time.”

“Yeah.”

The main doors to the courthouse banged open. Tina tensed, worried that Bonnie’s parents had finally arrived, or that the reporters had somehow seen through DX. The sound of formal shoes walking hastily on tile filled the hallway. Something squeaked. Then someone launched herself at Tina and Bonnie, catching them both in an exuberant, muscular hug.

Tina’s sister, Debra, started talking at a breakneck pace. “We didn’t miss it, did we? God, I hope not. I will be so mad at Mom and Dad if we got here too late.”

“We’re
